GUANG (Light) is an interactive wall installation that seeks to communicate different spaces, more specifically, the outside with the inside. Its goal is to help bring nature indoors, into our homes. With the use of pure white lights, the back panel lights up constantly luring the user into the space. Once standing on a pressure sensor placed under feet silhouette, a “rain of lights” surrounds the individual with beautiful organic shapes from nature.

Based on this prototype we got a chance to test the interaction, which led us to remove some difficulties from the equation. Now, instead of using felt pompoms as our pressure sensors, we will build a padded semi-sphere which will enclose several pressure sensors, and depending on how and where you touch it, it will trigger sets of lights and sounds in the installation. This will also give us more alternatives to hide the circuitry, for a better look+feel.

Here’s a small video of our working prototype.

There are three light balls being controlled by the fabric interface on the top. Playing the stroke sensor would give different brightness to the two blue light balls, and the slider controls the white light ball.

Materials:

  • wire
  • paper board
  • fabric
  • conductive fabric
  • velostat
  • plastic cup
  • scotch tape
  • twin adhesive
  • thread
  • conductive thread
  • 3 LEDs (two blue, one white)
  • 3v battery

The idea of Shock Game is moving the conductive stick from the starting point to the end point without touching the edge of route on the paper board. If a careless gamer touches the edge, correspondent LED lights will be lighted up as a warning. Besides, the conductive stick has a pressure sensor inside. The more nervous the gamer is, the tighter he holds the stick, which makes the LEDs light brighter.

Materials:

  • wire
  • jumper wire
  • color pencils
  • fabric
  • conductive fabric
  • velostat
  • paper
  • paper board
  • conductive tape

The right leaf is a switch. If it is pressed, the right lily will be lighted up. The left leaf is a pressure sensor, which lights up and controls the brightness of the left lily.

Materials:

  • paper
  • conductive paper
  • copper tape
  • twin adhesive
  • conductive thread
  • 2 red LEDs

A spring festival couplet is a piece of red paper with some greeting words on it, being pasted on the walls and doors to celebrate Chinese New Year. This Spring Festival Couplet I made has the meaning of “Spring is coming”. The Chinese character “Spring” one the red paper is a three diminutional paper-cut with circuit in the back.

Materials:

  • paper
  • conductive paper
  • copper tape
  • scotch tape
  • twin adhesive
  • 1 red LED

The paper garment is originally hanged with a hanger. If you remove the hanger and put the garment into the display closet, the garment will be lighted up.

Materials:

  • wire
  • twin adhesive
  • blue ribbon
  • toilet paper
  • paper
  • 1 blue LED
  • 3v battery

ROLE /
This headphone is designed to be an accessary which you may keep wearing it when you are not using it. It can be designed to match well with your outfits that you wear in different occasions.

LOOK & FEEL /
It could be any kind of long necklace with two earpieces and an audio out put pin.

IMPLEMENTATION /
When you want to  make the headphone change into a necklace, what you have to do is wrapping the string on your neck in whatever way you want and then hooking the snap ring with two other rings besides the earpieces.
